The Iconic Life Of Missy Elliot So Far…

Missy Elliot is one of the most iconic musicians of our generation, being a female rapper in a male dominated industry is not an easy feat but Missy came through strong, and with her bomb AF tracks she made an impact globally. She came from a tough background, but due to her love for her craft and her amazing resilience, she showed the world how strong she truly is. So without further delay, let’s take a look at her marvellous career.

Her Wonderful Career

The Beginning

Missy has said that “When we left, my mother realised how strong she was on her own, and it made me strong. It took her leaving her home to be able to realise that.”
After leaving an unsafe home with her mum, she realised her love for songwriting, She first formed a R&B group named Sista, with Timbaland as the group’s producer. This was all while she was still a teen! How can one person be that talented THAT young?? The group quickly got a record deal, and Missy also left the group to work with Timbaland as a production and songwriting duo to create tracks for other artists (like Aaliyah). And the coolest thing is that, because she didn’t want to work under another record label, she created her own Record Label called The Goldmind Inc. in 1997. An ACTUAL independent queen.

First Album

Missy dropped her first album (Supa Dupa Fly) in 1997, and it became platinum. When you’re someone this talented it’s hard to not succeed in every project. Her MVs were very unique for the time as they were more of Afro-futuristic aesthetic. Embracing her black side while also integrating a futuristic vibe. And from here, you could say the rest is basically history. As she continued to collaborate with SO many artists like Spice Girls, she released her second album and just kept succeeding. Nothing could stop this woman and nothing has.

What Now?

Well, now she finally got some recognition for all of her amazing talents. She was inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame (and was the FIRST female rapper to receive this honour) + she received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. She continues to release more music such as her EP Iconology and has started to experiment with more genres because why not right? Missy also has continued to feature on more songs like Levitating by Dua Lipa and even on some K-Pop tracks. Told you she’s a global queen.  Missy Elliot has been through an amazing career, and became a massive game changer because she focused on issues like feminism, body positivity and sex positivity BEFORE it was cool to do so. We can’t wait to see what she brings next!
